Thanks for commenting Ken. We really enjoyed our trip to Skagway too, although Haines was more our speed. Living in AK, we cherish the casualness and friendliness of fellow Alaskans. Skagway was a very interesting place to visit, and we had quite a wonderful time, but the main part of town was just too touristy for our taste. That's why we enjoyed Jewell Gardens so much - the locals were hanging out there! Haines, on the other hand, was laid back, quiet, and less touristy. Granted, they do get cruise ships too, but not as many as Skagway does.

Don't get me wrong, we love our tourists! I love to meet people from other states and countries and tell them about AK and all the wonderful things to see and do in this great state, but it's a bit disconcerting when a cruise ship pulls into port and thousands of people get off! Unfortunately cruise passengers don't always get the chance to see the "real" Alaska. That's a shame.

You should go back to Dawson City. It was a fascinating place to visit, with so much gold rush history.

Thanks again for stopping by,
Susan

Hi Susan,

A great blog! I was in Skagway in summer 2008 for some vacation job - it was a blast. Skagway is absolutely attractive! I wished i never had to return to Singapore. Now my friends and I are planning to return to Skagway for a Skagway-Denali-Wrangell trip in autumn 2012/2013, planning for such a long vacation half a globe away involves plenty of money.

I didn't know about the glassblowing studio at Jewells Gardens, but they do serve great food!

I boarded the White Pass Yukon Rail (WPYR) thrice, the scenery was at it best in early May when the snow hasn't melted. If you do visit Skagway again, do hike up to Upper Dewey Lake; the trail starts behind the Westmark Skagway Inn. Chilkoot Trail is 33miles long, after the steep climb to the Golden Staircase, the remaining 20miles is relatively flat and the scenery is stunning! I didn't regret bringing my canon 20D and 10-22mm lens at all!

I'm not sure if i liked the Canadian section of Alaska Highway; it's too bumpy for our liking. Top of the World Highway is impressive, we got stuck at the USA-Canada border because we missed the timing. The sun was shining brightly at 2am. It was a very surreal feeling for people who are living in tropical areas.

I guess i spent too little time exploring Dawson City, and your website is tempting me to return!

P.S: if you have Facebook, do add me via my hotmail address to look at some of my photos.
